Make it Stop

With a friendly, "Hello" and polite smile, I made contact with a woman in her late twenties accompanied by an adorable young chile. She smiled and rushed her walk, her child smiled also dragged by her hand grip and faced paced walk. She began to glance the wall of shoes and the large selection, taking her attention and had off of the boy. She walked over to the woman's specified selection of shoes and smiled and talked to herself in amazement at the matallic shoes. She paused, looked up and shouted, "GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE!" She made eye contact with me and the other girl behind the counter, and walked over to her son and grabbed the material on his shit off of his shoulder, and pulled him beside her and the woman's selection of shoes. He had been amused and mesmerized by the wall of skateboards, and the oak racks that were filled with long-boards bright in color and graphics. He made contact with us as well, but just a quick glance, and then back down to the floor he stared as his mom, picked up a few more Nike, "high-tops." He waited for her to select a pair that kept her attention for more than a few seconds, at which he inched closer and closer to the oak long-board rack just five feet away from his mother. She walked around the clearance rack, looked up and saw where her son was standing and continued to walk around the rack. When she saw nothing that caught her eye, her head magnetically locked on to the location where he son was standing. He had already made eye contact with her, he had been glancing up every few seconds, as if he was waiting for this moment when she would finally realized he was no longer at her side. In three fast long strides, she grabbed the boys ear, twisted it, and slapped his face, "You didn't think I was gonna do it, Huh!? Touch something else again, don't listen to me again! See what happens!" He held back his tears as long as possible, and a few streamed down his face, but not sound, just a read glow overcame his tan skin tone, and the streams from the tears he began to cry. She looked directly at me, and my mouth that was wide open on the counter, and my watering eyes, and at my frozen stance and only my eyes followed them both as she gripped his elbow and quickly walked out of the store.

I covered my mouth, and fashed back to my abuse childhood. I recalled a time when my mother was helping my sister make a pinata for her twelth birthday party. It was in the shape of a football, and had colors and decor to support the Dallas Cowboys. I was on the couch watching along, because my assistance was denied. My sister was warapping the letter, "A" with alluminum foil, she blurtted, "Stupid A," in frustration, because the foil would grip onto the other side and grab ahold of the letter. My mother looked at my sister, with big wide eyes, I rememberd her pupil and iris deseptring compeletly and only revealing the white of her eyes. Her face turned red in anger, she lifter her hand and slapped my sister. My sister Jessica, dropped whatever was in her hands, and backed up to the wall behind her and looked up at my mother. I sat and stared at my mother and my crying sister, I didn't say a word, I was frozen and mute. My sister in quiet words asked why she had been slapped. My mother thought that she had said, "stupid ass" instead of "stupid A." When Jessica spoke up and told my mother what she originally had said, my mother shrugged her shoulders and said, "well good, becasuse you dont swear." She caressed my sisters cheek and noticed that even her nails had scratched her, and sent her to the bathroom to clean up and put something on it. I sat on the couch, and looked away, when eithe of them looked at me. I knew it was either a look and plea for help, or a stern glare, and warning squint, because I knew I could "get it" just as bad.

It was as if my body locked and returned into the mode of when I was a child, helpless to the strength and knowledge my mother once had used against me. My heart sank, and felt the pain of the child that was hurting. I could see his eyes were screaming for help. Yet my mouth stayed open and body motionless. I had let this woman leave my sight without a word, or at least a simple defense for an innocent child. The fear, that he too would, "get it" worse later, if someone interjected on her discipline held onto my tonge. I was speechless, frustrated, and raging with anger. After years of abuse, how could I let this situation occur in front of me, without a word or moment to process what I had just witnessed. Fear set over my mind and body, about the children that were under that same circumstances. The abuse, physical, mental, sexual or neglect. Whatever abuse, the thought of someone having to endure such a thing, slowley ate my thoughts and the rest of my shift minute by minute.
Violence has become a vicious cycle in and outside of the home. Constantly escalating and reaching to heights and rates of destruction. This has become a pattern that is repeated into the lives of victims and their families. We as humans of the same race, must intervene when situations like this occur to break the cycle and abusive behavior.

One is at risk to commit abuse of a child if they, themselves have experienced some form of abuse, mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, low socioeconomic and education status. An unwanted pregnancy can lead to the abuse of a child. Poor impulse control, inability to manage anger, low self-esteem, lack of social support, isolation, unemployment, and single or adolescents are more likely to abuse their children. Premature or colicky infants and children with physical or mental disabilities and chronic medical conditions are at higher risks for physical abuse. Children are also very likely to become the victims of abuse during partner violence.

The Mixx

When I have hours to spare, or feel like playing, "pretend" I will re-route my normal driving patterns to make it passed 12th and Indiana Avenue. On the corner sits a brick warehouse, that looks like its been sitting for years. Where windows should be, large colorful posters of abstract art work, block out light, and that chance to get a glimpse of further inside. Windows twenty feet tall reveal  unique pieces of furniture and art work. They reach out and capture the eyes first, then attack the brain  in attempts to analyze and understand its construction.

Inside the smell of importance and elegance loom over the invisible shields that must protect these rare and delicate pieces of art and valuables. An oil painting on canvas, a three piece set, attracted me with its natural tones and warm feeling. I reach for the  textured paper that hangs from yarn attached to the display.  "THE MIXX" Design Centre" headlines on the front, I open the piece of paper, and inside reads the title of the piece, along with the Artists name, both of which I cannot remember. What I do remember is the bold inviting tag, along with the price, this piece, was valued at $1, 200. I started to follow the same technique, when I moved from exhibit to display, to sectional theme. Many of the items I was in the presence of,  antique collect ables and rare pieces of furniture that cant be duplicated or found elsewhere.

I had fantasies of dressing my future home, or owning this particular couch because of its unique shape or color. I swear I can justify, why every individual piece there, "just has to me mine."  I take time to sit in every chair, and open every box that can be open. I pull open drawers, just to find hidden compartments and more drawers. I open compacts that once belonged to so and so. The baby fresh smell still cant escape my nostrils. I flip open catalogs, inside are head shot and still life images from old Hollywood movies. I gently glaze my fingers of the Piano valued over 11,000. I know it wont grace the presence of my home one day, I've come to terms and accepted it,but  I will however settle for just visiting its, "home". It brings me great satisfaction to be able to tour this massive collection of valuables. To learn its history, enjoy its presence, and expand my collection.

Cream City

Cream City is an indoor skate park located in the friendly neighborhood of Butler right out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Once a member, your able to shred for six bucks every visit. If your in need of new gear or you snap a deck during your session you can stop right in the shop available at cream city. Along with supplies for a good day of riding, you can snack on munchies and get whatever beverage the guy behind the counter can reach.

The park itself is a welcoming experience. There are riders from all over Milwaukee and surrounding areas. Many skate competitions, are held here at cream where pro skaters hold and jam competitions with local skaters. Its a great way for our locals to build street cred and eventually become seen. I was able to roam about as I wished with the "VIP" card in hand.

I was filming with a Sony HDR Fx 7, as well as capturing images on a Nikon D3000. Either or in hand allows access to any spot in the house. As soon as the red light appeared, I noticed changes that occurred over these dudes and the way they skated. The jokes that are exchanged between friends and strangers provided echos throughout he warehouse. Funny face, shout outs and fueled energy roared my way. The filming, "hyped" them up, and gave them a reason to skate harder, because potential people of interest could one day get a hold of skate videos my friends put together from the footage they collect. Its the way pro riders have become recognized, through videos, that captures tricks, and consistency from a skater,  and hoping for the attention of many.

I see much respect for "seniors" of the club or the "best" skaters that attend the park. Many will stop their trick or get out of the way completely to witness a good trick and give a good skater room to get a good shot or quality time landing tricks on rails or sets around the park. When tricks are not landed and boards go flying, a helpful friend stops it from jetting across the park or from smashing into something else. When someone takes a hard fall, a friend on wheels rushes over to encourage them back up. When a gnarly trick is landed, claps, shouts, screams and high-fives are tossed in the air. Skateboards are tapped on ramps or rails to produce loud noise to encourage and congratulate the skater on their landed trick. You can see guys from across the park, that will take the time to come over and shake a hand of a good skater and ask for tips.

The relationship and friendship throughout the park fuels the energy of others to pump, push and force tricks to the next level, constantly pushing things to the limit. I one of my final glimpses through the lens as I scan the area, i see a warehouse full of men , teenagers and boys with hair dripping with sweat. Their pro-skater logo-ed t-shirts are distinctly lined darker once again from sweat stains. Jeans are tore and dirty, their shoes are worn to the soles and patched with, "shoe-goo," caused from impact during tricks, shes rub against the grip tape causing shoes to shred apart in three skate sessions. Shoe laces are used as belts, and beanies are used as sweat bands or head towels. Smiles and laughs head toward the camera, along with echoes of boards hitting metal coping edges and ply-wood ramps.

Into the wild...

I couldn't help but take advantage of the first bit of sunlight I saw on Saturday. I had been like a caged animal all week, enclosed by walls and rooms that were deficient of natural lighting. I needed to break free, from rushing cars that zoomed past me within the blink of an eye. I needed to escape the screaming pleas of small children begging to be let loose from their strollers and cart and into their designated play ares. I needed to slip the collar and just feel at peace with myself again. I needed to feel natural elements around me.

I headed out for some woods a few miles southwest from Sheboygan, Wisconsin. The wooded area serves as public hunting and fishing grounds and stretches out for 612 acres.

Many wildlife species call home to these lands. White-tailed deer, turkey, woodcocks, cottontail rabbits, gray squirrel, and ring-necked pheasants roam these woods, and keep us company along our hike. Uplands, restored prairies, season grasses and northern hardwoods like maple, basswood and ash can be seen in all many areas throughout or exploration.

We followed familiar trails but often were lead away by an animal, traces of animals or just natural scenery. We headed toward the lowlands, where marsh marigolds were budding and skunk cabbage was crunched beneath every step. I favored the smell of the cabbage, and I tore some from its root, and smelled it as I walked along. Through the swamp we ran into a spring we washed off out boots and listened to the water and natures calls.

Several cold-water seeps and springs, run together to combine and form the North Branch of the Milwaukee river. The creek is a class 1, trout stream were naturally producing brook and brown trout can been seen. Among them, northern white cedars, black ash, tamarack, yellow birch and speckled alder are mainly caught.

I spent a good thirty minutes, sitting in my boyfriends deer stand, imagining and picturing and just fantasizing the thrill of a hunt, or a good catch. Silence was necessary, I was guest in mother natures home, where she always won. I looked up, side to side and all around, glancing in every direction and the slightest noise or chirp of a bird. The chance to only hear wildlife, and my breathing was a moment of solitary my mind had craved for days. To feel the wind through my hair and against my face as it carried me to the next trail was priceless. I just needed a few moments to imagine what life once like as a hunter or gatherer. I needed just a moment into the wild and away from humanity.

The Convention

On Saturday I attended Chicago Illinos 2012 Tattoo Arts Convention at The Crowne Plaza Hotel. The convention was scheduled all weekend long, and I was lucky to be able to attend for the day. We headed out early and set out for Chicago.

The trip there was great. There wasn't to much construction, we didn't get lost, and we didn't have cash to pay the tolls... so I'll just expect something in the mail! Parking was insane. Everywhere we looked, vehicles were being rerouted to new areas. We managed to find parking about two blocks away in a different hotels parking garage. We followed the crowds of people and headed into the convention.

The valet area was overtaken by a mixture of smokers. As I glanced the area I noticed stereotypical subcultures, you know, those with torn, and thrashed jeans, Mohawks, fishnets and boots. I noticed Moms and Dads that threw on their, "Harley Gear" and headed out to the convention with their kids for the day. Pin-up style models and other tattooed models roamed the isles advertising shops. I saw teens and many in their early twenties, getting their bodies started on, "new ink."

We payed twenty dollars and entered the convention. My eyes were up down and all around eventually crossing all together. There were so many forms of art to take in all at once. It was not my first convention, but it easy to not the differences from city to city. Hundreds of people walked the hotel displaying art on their personal bodies. Artists had booths dedicated to their work. Sketch books layed on tables in front of booths, along with t-shirts, stickers and business cards.

As we walked along, I noticed that many of these artists had traveled many miles to attend this convention. Many artists were eager to talk, hear ideas and listen to feedback. Many shared personal stories and even stories of the craziest tattoos they have given. We heard many stories about the previous night after parties and promises of even crazier hours to come. Over the loud speaker, the announcer Called for, " ONLY SINGLE CURVY PIN UP MODELS TO BE USED AS MODELS FOR ARTIST!" We all laughed, continued on.

We had finally ran into, Jason Angst' booth. He was in the process of doing a piece on a mans leg along with another artist that was helping him. Time is so valuable at conventions, many go in hopes of getting dream tattoos by artists they do not have the ability to see often. Many request pieces that require much time from artist and money from the customer as well as energy to sit through long hours.

We came back a little while after while Jason finished up his patient customer who sat six hours for his leg piece. To finish up a half sleeve with specific detail we sat four hours. Many different artists have their own rates. Jason was a friend, and a well-known artist who is generous to those who support his work.

While Justin sat, I talked with Jasons wife, who has piercings anywhere there was skin, and her skin, was an almost full canvas her husband had taken advantage of. All of her pieces were carefully, mastered with many hours of work to support it.

Walking through the booths, I was able to see many tattoo artists in action. Amy Nicoletto from LA Ink was tattooing at the show along with Megan Massacre, and Chris Torres, from New York Ink.

I left super excited, and filled with many ideas to finish up my sleeve. I was very impressed with the work that Jason Angst had done on Justin and am looking forward for him to start on mine.

I most definitely recommend that you people get up, and get influenced by some creative work at conventions. Don't get a tattoo, that's not what m saying, but to experience many different forms of live art is worth the while.

Always an Adventure...

On days off of work, I can't help but consume my minutes and hours with excitement or adventure. Whether indoors or out, I always seemed to find something new to try or see. My patient loved one sits and stares as I ramble and change subject after subject about the possibilities that our day offers. My morning ritual consists of waking up, and really giving a solid twenty minutes to just lye there and brainstorm the possibilities.

The night before, I had watched a preview of the re-release of Titanic. It was specially going to be featured in 3-D and IMAX theaters. I flashed back to my 6th grade field trip to the Milwaukee Museum. I was mesmerized by the exhibits like, "The Old Streets of Milwaukee." Most of all, I was amazed and captivated by, The Humphrey IMAX Dome Theater. "That's it!" Followed by the, "Oh Please Please Can we go?" Yes, like a child, he could see the excitement in my eyes, and of course he couldn't help but gave in to my extreme joy from my childhood memories.

I jumped online to make sure the place existed. The website revealed a new addition to the IMAX Dome Theater, The Daniel M. Soref Planetarium. The Planetarium had a new projection system that creates enhanced 3-D animations, which produce planets, stars that highlight constellations, that can be seen throughout the dome theater. A live tour is even included, which gives an overview of the current night sky.

We loaded up with snacks upon arival and tickets for, "Cleopatras Universe" and "Born to Be Wild." The Dome Theater is lit up with bright blues and greens, and the background of the giant dome is a stary night. Choosing our seats was difficult with a line of people trailing us, the decision needed to be quick. We headed up the steps, and then into a row, just a glance down made me a little dizzy. The seating was specially arranged and designed to give full effect to the dome screen, making all of the rows seem really steep.

All of a sudden, the lighting became dim, and a sun setting took place. A voice took over, Brian our tour guide, explained the evening sky, and moon phase. He pointed out constellations, planets, and added special effects like sounds and shooting stars. It was awesome and much better than the 6th grade.

Cleopatras Universe amazed me every single step of the way into history and into ancient ruins. Her power and intelligence intrigued and fascinated me. Although the loss of battle against Actium lead to her suicide, Cleopatra the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt was a significant period in history that is still studied today.

As people left after the first showing, we stayed in our seats and awated the next film, "Born to Be Wild." This documantry about orphaned orangutans and elephants really captured my heart. The people that travel to great lengths to protect and raise these endangered animals really touched my heart. The special effects, music and scenery was amazing. In forty five minutes it was as if I traveled to Kenya, Africa and through the jungle. It was as we were along the entire lifetime, from the birth and rescue to the release back into the wild, their home. Watching the heroic rescues of baby elephants being hunted and rehabilitated completely changed the mood from the educational movie before.

My new experience back at, The Milwaukee Museum was well worth it! I really encourage a walk though of the exhibits themselves and an extraordinary movie experience at the Humphrey IMAX Dome Theater and Panitarium.

Murder or Self Defense?

Masses of people gather and hold demonstrations outside of The Department of Justice in Newark, Washington. Many wear a "hoodie" or "hooded sweatshirt" to resemble or depict the ensemble that Trayvon Martin was wearing the evening of February 26, when he was shot and killed by a 28 year old male, who was a resident of a home nearby. George Zimmerman was also a neighborhood watch volunteer, and had called police to report Tryvon as well as his "suspicious" behavior. Trayvon Martin a was a 17 year old African American boy walking home from a convenient store, to the home of his father's fiancee in a gated community.

Police records, police and cellular phone conversations and witness accounts the following brief overview of the evening of February 26.George Zimmerman makes the police phone call to report what he believes is, "suspicious behavior." Trayvon begins to run and is pursued by George Zimmerman, after the dispatcher, he is and has been on the phone with told him, "We don't need you to do that." After losing sight of Trayvon, phone records show that around that time, Martin was on the phone with his girlfriend. Who has made public statements, that she heard someone ask Martin what he was doing and Martin asking why he was being followed. An altercation is occurring and the connection goes dead. Witness' in the area have come forward to say, at one point the man with the "red shirt" was on the ground being attacked. The man in the, "red shirt" is identified as George Zimmerman, later in police reports as well as surveillance. Other stories, from neighbors and people in the area, report hearing Trayvons screams, and calls for help. Neighbors heard a gun shot at which now more phone call pour in to report, gun shots and screams.

When police arrived, the teenager was unarmed and carrying a small about of money, a bag of candy and a beverage. George Zimmerman tells police he shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense. George Zimmerman has not been charged, due to the "stand your ground law, enacted in 2005. The law allows people to use deadly force to defend themselves anywhere they feel reasonable fear of death or serious injury. Currently this case was been turned over to the state attorney.

Many have called Zimmerman a racist, and have formed petition and are gathering and rallying all over the united states to defend the injustice and murder of Trayvon Martin. Although family has come to defend Zimmerman, and states that he is half Hispanic and has a multiracial family. 911 phone calls released portray a different picture, of an aggressive man, who uses racial slurs to describe the individual, and indicates that his attire alone, promoted questionable behavior. George Zimmerman has stated that he was attacked by Trayvon Martin, and that Trayvon attempted to disarm him, when in self defense, he fought back and shot him. Reports say that Zimmerman is bleeding on the back of the head and his nose, and that there is blood on his clothes and visible. Surveillance images show, no signs of blood or an injured or hurt Zimmerman. Sanford Po ice Chief Bill Lee has announced that he will temporarily step down as head of the department after being criticized for the was he has handled the shooting and death of Trayvon Martin.

Everyday it seems my opinion changes on who is at fault for the murder of Trayvon Martin.

I truly believe we all are. The events throughout history have caused immense damage to our people of every race and ethnicity. The advantage we have taken of each other for personal gain in history has shown us gruesome realities of those who suffered as slaves, or prisoners. When it began exactly can I point the situation first began, I cannot. But I can refuse to participate in the bullshit of "today" to continue to influence or produce stereotypes toward human beings as less intelligent, or as criminals or a any characteristic that is degrading or demeaning. I refuse to by the rap CD, that encourages drug use, unprotected sex, violence, murders or death upon anyone or anything. I will not watch movies that help portray criminals in large cities, as, "young, black males in hooded sweatshirts and baggy jeans." I will not, be alarmed or question the behavior of a minority in a "quiet or upscale" neighborhood.

I do however understand the other side of my point of view. I recognize it and respect it. We have all experienced situations or scenarios that have lead us to our current standing opinions. However, he death of Trayvon Martin was Perseid. The Life of Trayvon Martin was taken away by a man who thought to quickly about protecting himself with deadly force out of fear, of an unknown individual who wore a style of dress, that prompted safety concerns.

Where the eff is my View Master?

Originally created in 1911, by Sawyers Photo Services, to view photographic postcards. They went through a period where many companies had them under the radar including the Army to help share photographic images. Ideal Toy Company purchased View-Master in 1987, boosting marketing techniques and switching to production of Kidsongs. Tyco Toys Later purchased the View Master making the success and a toy in every home.

This was my favorite toy as a child. I remember taking my VewMaster , and all of my slides that I could scavenge up from my sisters who would like to steal them from me. I would test every room and the amount of light it contained, just checking which room had the best lighting for my viewmaster slides. Not to bright and not to dark, it really needed to be just right. Yea, I was that kid.. so what.

I often brought my slides outside, and sat under the giant tree that overtook our roof with its leaves. I spent hours viewing, "Winne the Pooh", "Batman," "Barbie," and one of my favorites, "The Dinosaurs." I remember trading slides with my sisters and playing, "nice" for once. We never left the house with these, once they were in our possession and off of the store shelves, we were to excited to leave without them.

Times have quickly changed. What once amused me and brought me so much delight was quickly tossed to the side, when introduced to my four year old nephew. He too has caught on quickly to our rapid inventions. His tight grip and in depth stare was caused by the stolen attention of an, "I-Pad." He was watching his favorite intro to one of his favorite cartoons, "The Backyardagins."

I will still continue to stand in amazement at our Wide World of Technology and how rapidly it produces toys, that hold the attention for a few weeks, and then they are tossed a top a pile of has beens to new inventions, that take learning and entertainment to a new level.

New Cage

More than thankful, the lovely city of Sheboygan was given the gift of a skate park more than 6 years ago. To date, the park has not had many fixtures, or remodeling since the initial building of the skate park.

The Skate Park is an awesome addition to Sheboygan, and the youth in our community. However, with the lack of attention the park receives, caged in on the property of Kiwanis Park, has lead to further deterioration.

My nephews love going to the park, and while they shred, I clean up garbage these messy boys casually throw behind. The ledges are bent or lifting, the ramps are rusted and old, and the park is surrounded with a metal fence.

The Sheboygan Skate Park needs to seek, private or public funds to keep this environment thriving. Lack or areas to skate, often leads to public or private destruction that skateboarding causes to hand rails, or public seating or recreation areas. Skateboarding is also illegal in the roadways and many public sidewalks, making it impossible to skateboard anywhere.

Cement Skate plazas are the new ascetically pleasing, and community friendly skate parks being built in many cities around the world. It would be great to see and demolition of our current skate park, replaced with a new area for a Skate Plaza. The metal during the summer, burns in the sunlight, causing harmful injury to those who fall. Its terrible to see the kids that get hurt down there, do to the lack of funding to keep up with fixture.

On Sunday, March 16th 2012, Sheboygan's Local Skate Shop, "Revolution" will be hosting another fund raiser and park clean up in order to boost efforts in raising donations to re-build our skate park. We will have the chance to meet with the new park director and raise important issues and idea about what we can do, to keep our kids developing healthy habits, and active lifestyles.

"GONZ"

Mark Gonzales, also known as the "Gonz," is known in the skateboarding world as the pioneer of street skating, which is most popular form of skateboarding. His influences are: Rob Roskopp, George Horton, Jay Adams, Joe Lopes, Neil Blender, John Lucero, Jeff grosso, Eric Nash and Ben Schroeder.

Mark hit the scene at the ripe age of 15 years old with a "unique" style to street skating. He quickly picked up popular magazine covers like, "Thrasher" and was offered sponsorship by, "Vision Skateboards."

The "Gonz," set some records that have left landmarks, famous "skate spots." In, 1986 he cleared a major gap at Embarcadero in San Francisco. This was so major, that it will forever be known as the, "Gonz Gap." Famous for his, "front board slides," "50-50 hand rails," and "radical personality."

Mark greatly influenced skateboarding as it modernized in the early 90's. He released, "Video Days," but this time by his own company he created, Blind Skateboards. With much pressure from Santa Cruz, Alva, and Vision Skateboards to turn pro he choose Vision' later learning and feeling that Vision was to, "coorporate" and like many companies they sell out! and go where the power is. Many argue that the name Blind was an intention name in opposition of Vision. But Mark insists his inspiration came from a song by the, "Talking Heads."

Not only is this man an impeccable skater but he has also established a career as an accomplished artist, writer, painter, poet and actor. Today, Mark is keeping busy with his company and skate team, "Krooked." He also rides for Spitfire wheels, Independent Truck Company, Fourstar Clothing, and Adidas.

Thrasher Magazine has named Mark Gonzales, "the most influential skater of all time." Without this guy, it would be difficult to know where skating would be today. He has the consistent ability to change , and tap into new realms of skateboarding constantly changing the elements of skateboarding.

"i wanna be just like you"

When I enter a room, I carefully scan the area, indicating and setting up mental markers for garbage cans, tissues, clocks even escape routes in case of an emergency. I carefully select my seating, completely making personal and mental judgements based on ones appearance. Even though at times they fail me, my instincts usually lead me to where I feel I am meant to go. I have learned to trust them in courageous matters, and have learned to let go, and put my trust in the word of others.

I knew the professor, and have had many of her courses. I was able to get away with sitting at the back of the class typing every word that ever came out of her mouth. I also had to remain close to one of the only student accessible power sources. Most of the kids that occupied the seats beside me, where either the, "geniuses" that spent their class drawing a notebook filled with an anime comic story, not paying attention at all to lectures but still scoring high 90's or the kids that spent the entire class period flipping between "popula"r social network sites like, 'Facebook", "Tumblr", and "Twitter". I catch a number of "TMZ" photo uploads and re posts to either site, followed by joke, or humiliating story, most likely false but juicy in detail. Did I mention that, these are the kids I see sticking around to fail or , doing the smartest thing of all semester and dropping by the financial aid refund date.

The few that stuck around to cause their life demise, never participated in class discussions, but often interrupted with whispers and giggles. Due to my eye for, "precise location" I was at the center of conversation.

Today I found out that, "Snooki" a character from a "reality television programming show" was pregnant. The reality show takes please on the Shores of New Jersey. Sex, partying, sex, and emotional outbursts containing profanity seem to be the obvious social norms, displayed within the first fifteen minutes. Entertaining to some, a shame to me.

The next topic, more important than, the failing healthcare system in the United States was Lindsay Lohan appearance this Saturday on "SNL." They began filling each other in on Lindsay's history with drugs and alcohol. With the credibility of gossip articles like, "TMZ" these students and their attention was absorbed by the false identity's and advertisements of television programming.

I was concerned for myself, and those who would invest in energy and time into success. After all, these "glamorous" lifestyles portrayed ordinary people, "striking it rich" with their wit, charm and good looks. I was concerned and fearful of those that would buy into these, "lifestyles" meant to "entertain" us and become consumed to the point of obsession. Enough for one to mimic and idolize the actions that seem to be encouraged by most of my peers.

Really, this just pissed me off because instead of being concerned about current events that will effect our future or current political issues, they were obsessing about ordinary people who are payed to "act" and "entertain." At times I feel, we forget these are people that face the same decisions we do.

Unfortunately when the director yells, "cut" the life of a movie star is captured on an endless reel, waiting to be exposed, and waiting to be mislead.

MADE Gallery most certainly will have something for any person with an appreciation for glass and art. These artists have turned glass into captivating imitations of mother natures creations. Glass forms that look like flowers that personally remind me of the stunner flower, many areas so intricate that they resemble the stamen and anther of the blue flower. Others use tubes, toros, rigs, and pipes to display characters from popular television shows or celebrities or just characters from their wild imagination. But many artists just have their owns styles or preferences. The picture here is a callaboartion featuring, "Bearclaw and "Ghost". This is a mask, that is paried with another just as bangin. These two are selling for 30k!

"Slinger" one of the many underground glass artists is featured at MADE and can be observed in many collections. Specaliizing in the form of borosilicate glass through the form of the pipe, Slinger has mastered an epic method and technique for us to enjoy. Popular pieces like the, "Morton Assault Girl" were not in sight. Its pretty exclusive shit, hard to get your hands on at times, many people don't want to sell or give this up from their personal collections. I DO NOT blame them.

Collaborations are the two in one. These raw artists, come together putting their special touches all in one. "Slinger" and "Snic" did a colab and came up with their special, "fifteen minutes of fame rig." Blown borosilicate glass is most def the work of slinger, and electroformed copper are most definitely is the technique that "Snic" is known for.

I couldn't help but fall in love with the work of, "Bearclaw." The dishes in his display case were to die for, but what really captures the eye is the appearance of carved wood but on glass. The "graalacello bub" was a mouthwatering treat.

All in all it was an intense night. Met a lot of real good people and had the pleasure of really checking out some rare pieces.

:.Always add to your collection.:

LipStick

This is USU Club President Jessica Nichols riding Burton's 2011Womans LipStick snowboard.

This masterpiece was released last year and has been taring up areas near you. I have been given the luxury of being able to ride this mutha sucka when ever I want to. Working in a snowboard shop certainly has its perks, but being able to test, enjoy and push this board to its limits sure is thrilling. The true reward, is being able to educate those on this amazing invention and then cruise beside them.

Although the Lipstick is a woman's specific board, there are many suitable to your particular interest in riding. The most difficulty I found when I learned was, catching an edge. Thankfully the lipstick was designed for us ladies to avoid this disaster all together. The Lipstick offers "frostbite edges," beneath the bindings the boards edges are extended out slightly for edge-hold on hard, icy conditions, which is perfect for conditions typically in the Sheboygan area. The edges are powerful when you need to make the sharp carve and easy when you don't. The frostbite edges really allow this board to be super forgiving in softer conditions.

This baby is also packed with additional heat..the, "Hi-Voltage Jumper Cables." These are ultra-light carbon stringers allow energy to push outward from your feet, toward the tip and tail. With this feature you will feel maximum flight, and really have a precise control of your board. Trust yourself ladies, you have board here made with, "Triax Fiberglass." The tapered tip and tail thickness allows the mobility your boards needs to shift weight, the response is all here. Because the Lipstick was designed with you in mind it was ran through a machine that allows it to already be broken in from Burtons lab is called the, "infinite ride." The "Flying V" feature on this board enhances playfulness and float through fresh powder. Meanwhile underneath your feet the camber zones are focused on controlling those edges to allow you have a crisp ride with power and pop!

I have only been on a board for three years, with no previous experience. With time, a little bit of cash to spend, and dedication I was able to master the skills needed to cruise and enjoy mother nature. I am certainly not going to fight her and be miserable all winter, so instead, I am using her. Snowboarding really is another sight to see and a feeling to that's good for words. . .

see you on the slopes

First Timer...

On Sunday September 19, I attended my first packer game at Lambeau Field. Even though I have lived in Wisconsin for my entire life, I never took the opportunity to experience a live football game. So I grabbed the chance by the horns and dropped $141 for a ticket in the 9th row by the 10 yard line. Was it worth it?...YES! Should you have been there?...YES! Even if you don't like football or the Packers, I think the environment is worth it. From the tailgating, to the walk up to the stadium and the walk away memories were surly made.

Let me be honest here, I am not a die hard Packer fan, or Football fanatic whatsoever. I'm not able to catch every Sunday or Monday night game. But, after this Sunday I may be tuning in more frequently.

The tailgating was quite the show. Surrounding the stadium are hundreds of people gathered in small groups, playing games, throwing around footballs, laughing , drinking and singing along to good ol' tunes. Everyone that I looked at, had a huge smile on their face and awaited greeting the next person. Large white tents are filled with people, live music and even mechanical bull riding. Feel free to ignore a few vendors with expensive merch, the one 9 feet away will have the same thing maybe more or less.

Once your rear hits your seat and the beer to your lips, all worries melt away. Jets fly across the stadium following the national anthem. As you scan the crowd, you cant help but notice, that not one seat is empty. The entire game, fans are cheering and arguing with rivals. Chants are memorized like holy scriptures. Even if you don't know them, chances are that the guy next to you is to wasted and making up their own, play along.

With a win, the exit is just as interesting as the entrance. Face paint and wild get ups are still intact and of course beer sampling all the way to the parking lot your vehicle sits. The chaos continues for hours after the game has ended. Everyone was there for one thing in common, whether you were on this end or that one, the day is well spent.

"Che"

This familiar yet intense face, is sported on t-shirts all over the world. Ernesto "Che" Guevara is the name belonging to this revolutionary. At the beginning of the year, in History class I was able to choose any book to complete a book review on. I choose Che, despite the endless possibilities I had.

Che was born a native to Argentina, and immediately took an interest in school. He took a large interest in traveling and eventually dropped out of Medical School in order to travel. His early observations in Peru, Buenos Aires and Guatemala sparked thought of change. The inequality among individuals and groups within a society such as economic inequality really angered Che. He witnessed first hand many unjust activities that would stay locked in his memory forever.

Che returned home and finished Medical School. He began to travel again and ended in Mexico where his support was for liberation. Ernesto came to trust Fidel and Raul Castro. These men began a secret training camp which sparked the Guerrilla Warfare. Che was an outstanding leader, with amazing tactic and wisdom.

From 1956 to 1966 he lead battles throughout Latin America. His revolutionary state of mind ended on October 9, 1966 when he was captured, shot and killed.

The reason he stood out to me so much was because, he and several man; disagreed with the way Juan Batista ran the country. Many things were occurring that were unfair. Many were starving and addicted to drugs. Land was taken from people and the people no longer had the right to vote. Che and others came together to fight the government, because they knew what they were doing was wrong. Che more than ever wanted to liberate Latin America’s oppressed and exploited masses. Che made three fundamental contributions to revelatory thought in Latin America. The Cuban experience showed that popular forces, could win in a war against a professional army. Another was that you didn’t necessarily have to wait until all conditions for revolution are present, that not all demand of people need to be met or fulfilled. Lastly if its to succeed than full concentration on rural areas, not just cities alone. He knew that he was a powerful person and that many supported his cause. With his fellow believers by his side he was not worried.

When he was captured and before he was put to death, he had told the officer, "I know you've come to kill me. Shoot, coward! You are only going to kill a man!" Che was not just another man, he believed in something and would not let the Government continue with things that were not right. It was a serious fight that drove him to the Congo, to live and fight in caves in the hills. It was a sacrafive and ultimately a life sacrifice he gave for the rights of man.

I know that there are so many issues I think about on a daily basis, that the government can just go on ignoring. Just the fact that The United States is fully capable of feeding all the starving mouths of the world amazing, but we don't feed the hungry. Instead we continue to let 4,000 die every hour of starvation. I would like to challenge myself to make a scene on an important life threatening issue, but the power of the government, compared to none(me), is scary. I think these days its just easier to get rid of someone who stands in the way, rather than dealing with the person. I do believe thought that one day a group of people are going to come together for the greater of the people and make a severe change or at least impact.

BP Oil Spill

On April 20th an explosion and fire took place on an oil rig that left 11 workers missing is causing a much larger dilemma than expected.

The rig sank 2 days later and on the 28th a leak was spotted. A well in the Gulf of Mexico has been leaking at was once said to be a rate of 1,000 to 5,000 gallons a day and may now be up to 60,000 barrels, which totals in 2.5 million gallons per day. With the rapid amount of oil spilling into the ocean, it is said that this oil spill may out due, The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill.

To cover up the initial place of leaking, the cost to BP said to be, 300 million dollars. The oil slick is 600 square miles, and could reach up to Louisiana shores. Not only is this extremly costly, but our wildlife is being effected as well. Whales, tuna and shrimp; dozens of species of birds; land animals, and amphibians are being threatened by this oil spill.

Oil booms are being used to clean up some of the mess. The booms are nylons stuffed with hair and fur that are tied together and used to surround and prevent the oil from further spreading. Over 750 vessels are involved in the response effort, including skimmers, tugs, barges and recovery vessels. The are taking the oil that has reached sea level and in-situ burning it, In-Situ is a process that consists of corralling concentrated parts of the spill in a 500-foot-long fireproof boom, moving it to another location and burning it.

When I first heard about this oil spill, was bout early last week. I could not believe I had found out so late. More importantly, i could not believe that this was not being talked about amongst people around me? I began to talk about it at work, and how scary this situation really is. When you look at the big picture, you can find it easy to notice several parts of the economy just decline even faster. Not only is our wildlife at risk, but so is our economy. Forty percent of all fish harvested in the U.S. (excluding Hawaii and Alaska) comes from the Gulf of Mexico, which now contains an oil slick visible from space. Another major concern is if the oil flows into estuaries and oyster beds, which will cause a major negative effect to wildlife and the seafood industry. I can see the prices rising on sea food, and illness as well if seafood providers are not taking extra precautions.

Prescription Addiction

I can not explain the amount of anger I feel when, I read about a drug overdoses. Especially when the drug is a prescription pill that was either given to that by the doctor or sold by someone who did have authorization to obtain the drug.

I often wonder how doctors determine which pill is suitable for a patient. Trial and error was the observation when I went to see my family doctor. I was experiencing anxiety, and told my doctor of the issues I was having. Almost immediately, I was offered Xanax. Xanax treats moderate and severe anxiety. Side effects include dizziness, dis-inhibition, suicidal ideation, hallucinations, slurred speech, drowsiness etc.

As soon as I heard that word my jaw dropped. I immediately shook my head, no that I didn't want that. I heard to many horror stories about friends becoming addicted. In 2002: 3,340,000,000 outpatient prescriptions were written by doctors. Without even checking to see if I had a history of drug abuse, I was already being offered a drug many abuse and sell. Prescription drug abuse is the #4 leading cause of death. Sales of prescription medicines worldwide rose 7% to $602 billion, according to IMS health, a pharmaceutical information and consulting company. Xanax is not the only cause for concern there are many others. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA's) 2004 Monitoring the Future survey, 9.3 percent of 12th-graders reported using Vicodin without a prescription in the past year, and 5.0 percent reported using OxyContin. Another recent survey reports that approximately 48 million people-about 20 percent of the U.S. population-aged 12 or older had used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons in their lifetimes.

I can share stories upon stories, about the friends I have had with addictions. They love to enlighten other on how they got there drug of choic. Often they went into the walk in clinic, their doctor, or even the emergency room just to get pain killers. Guaranteed the epidemic has been noted and doctors are aware of the new way to obtain drugs. The problem is addicts and dealers are getting a hold of them and our moms, dads, brothers and sisters are becoming its prisoners.

The realization of prescription drug abuse really hit home, when I received news Saturday afternoon that a good friend overdosed. The drugs used were prescribed to him and the other to his friend. He fatally made the decision to mix drugs and was found the next morning. Seeing a young person lose their life to addiction and abuse is probably one of the hardest to deal with. Close family and friends stood asking questions, but we all knew. We all new that a large percentage of Sheboygans youth has fallen to prescription drug abuse. Parents fuel the fire by leaving their pills laying out and doctors by prescribing powerful and highly addictive drugs to millions of Americans. Doctors are prescribing the pills, but are not even communicating with psychologists or psychotherapists on the proper treatment for the feeling and emotions a person is experiencing.

Doctors prescribe to many pills to millions of Americans everyday. We just eat them up and presume the problem will be corrected. Its leading to abuse, addiction and eventually death. The availability is outrageous and the use and abuse is sickening. According to the NIDA, "The number of new nonmedical users of pain relievers increased drastically-from 573,000 in 1990 to 2.5 million in 2000."

In 2006, a total of 38,396 persons died of drug-induced causes in the United States. This category includes not only deaths from dependent and non dependent use of legal or illegal drugs, but also poisoning from medically prescribed and other drugs.

The numbers continue to increase for outpatient prescriptions, along with the number of drug overdoses added to the death toll. Families and friends will continue to fall into the vicious routine of pills and become prisoners to something smaller than a dime.

"No, Sorry, I Cannot Service You. "

Guaranteed that if I was the owner of a restaurant, this is exactly what my kitchen staff would be expected to wear. I would some how find a way to get around every fire, medical etc. hazard these suits would cause. I have not been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, I do not believe I should be or that I have have previous issues, but the disgust brought upon by co-works has brought me to this level.

Grandma having all the special connections she has, helped me get a job as a busser. I was working at a restaurant cleaning tables and keeping things fully stocked. I loved the job, cleaning was easy and just doing what I was told. Everyone failed to mention that Monday and Tuesday was always slow and the rest of the week there was constant traffic.

There was something major I was lacking, the fact that I needed to pick up the pace, and keep it going. When I am being watched by more that 3 people, I become extremely nervous. I begin to think about the worst possible situations. I picture it before it happens, an extreme dramatic attack. Possibly from this girl that has been giving me the stink eye. Or a possible robbery. I know this is kind of weird, but I have been in some pretty messed up situations. I am also constantly looking around at my surroundings and being aware who and what is around me. I also become clumsy and cause a scene anyway by spilling something major like salsa or tripping over myself, or even bumping into things.

I quickly clean the mess and escape to the kitchen. Now the head cook is a really well known respected woman. My Grandma specifically told me to, "NEVER EVER EVER, talk back to Margie" My Grandma used extreme caution in her eye contact. She knew, that I didn't fully understand when it was time to stop talking. Getting slapped across the face because of smart remark was common to me. But when I spilled the salsa for the tenth time in a week she was fed up and I understood why. I had to take the embarrassment, every time she pointed out my mistakes. She was just really mean about it. I was told by the head bartender, "she made grown men cry!" Margie just really told it like it was, with absolute no sympathy. Because you would just not learn that way. Lucky she tended to leave early so her wrath was only for a few hours.

It was then that I got to see the real thing. I really want to avoid going into detail. The cooks took short cuts in making things. No hair nets were used. There was a separate room where pots and pans where kept. Often I would have to run in there and see flies on the pans and I just prayed they would wash them before they used them. It really was not extreme behavior like spitting or inhumane things like that it was just not up to par with what I expect when I eat out. Witnessing these things just made me paranoid about my future experiences.

I love when a counter smells like Clorox. This may be an exaggeration, but I expect everything to be spotless. We all know that this may impossible. I just get really shocked when someone is puking for days on end because of bad food they were served. Are places trying to save money and save food after the expiration date? Is meat and poultry kept at standard and expected temperature? I know not every place follows the precise rules day after day, but I sure do expect that.

I just am uncomfortable with the fact that I can't see who is handling my food and what they could be doing to it. I guess this situation depends on the person but I rather make my own food so I know what's in it. As a first job I am glad it was at a restaurant. At times it was fun, and nerve-wrecking but the experience was an eye opener. Hopefully owners have great judgment and a well supervised and clean atmosphere to keep crazy customers like me at ease.

420

As for many of us, on April 20th we went along on all of our normal activities and schedules for a typical Tuesday. While thousands of other college students and many others took part in, "420" which celebrates Marijuana and promotes and hopes for government acceptance. The original meaning behind statement came from a group of San Fransisco bay High Schoolers would come together and smoke in the 1970's. This became a popular term and was then highly promoted in High Times Magazine.

Many Television networks dedicated their entire day just to celebrate, "420." Channels like G4 educated their viewers by giving the history of Marijuana, its causes and why, as well as its effects and why. They traveld to places like Amsterdam where Marijuana shops are legal and give the experience and traditions in Holland. They educated us on devices that are less harsh on the lungs like vaporizers. These methods of using Marijuana are becoming more popular among cancer patients. According to The Natural Treatment for Common Health Problems, "In vaporization, the active elements of marijuana are released or turned into a vapor without combustion. This stops the release of toxins in marijuana smoke. This means that medical marijuana patients can avoid the adverse effects of smoking with the help of a vaporizer."

They also humored us as well by playing popular movies like, "Half Baked, Super High Me, and Dazed and Confused, just to name a few. They had guest appearances like Snoop Dogg, Cheech and Chong who are known for their Marijuana use. They, themselves depict there recreational hobbies in Comedy Movies like, "Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke" and pictures that suggest Marijuana use. G4 also showed intense grow labs, many that are legal in Northern California. They also showed Law Enforcement catching on to outdoor illegal cultivation in places like natural forests. The Police and Investigators finds these plants and cut them down and eventually burn them destroying them all completely.

While I was amused by rituals involving marijuana, I wondered how the legalization process was coming along. Currently there are fourteen states that have enacted laws that legalized the use of medicinal Marijuana. There are twelve states that allow up to eight ounces, Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Main, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Vermont. Washington and Oregon allow twenty-four usable ounces. In all states the user must obtain an id card. The identification card is prescribed by a doctor for the use of Medicinal Marijuana.

However here in Wisconsin on Marijuana is still illegal. On April 22, 2010 The proposal to legalize is not, "one of the top prioritizes" the Legislature will take up. "While advocates for legalizing it had hoped the bill would pass under support from Democrats who control the Legislature, the proposal never made it up for a vote in either the Senate or Assembly." Unfortuitly for people in Wisconsin they will have to keep trying.

The masses of students on capital property, lighting up and blazing is quite a site to see. Police stand around making sure crowds stay in control and observe thousands smoking out of bongs, pipes, and joints. You can hear Bob Marley in the distant sound waves and through the ear phones of many. The Rastafarian culture becomes known. The Colors Red, Yellow and Green are worn on beenes, or on t-shirts and wrist bands and bandannas. Part of the Rasta Culture is to smoke Ganja its considered, "Sacrament." Ganja cleans the body and mind, heals the soul, exalts the consciousness, facilitates peacefulness, brings pleasure, and brings them closer to God or Jah.

In 1936 "Reefer Madness", scared parents by depicting Marijuana as a deviant social problem and if their children smoked pot they would, kill, rape, and eventually die. Through the years people have seen the growth and acceptance of Marijuana. Around the world it is part of rituals and religious ceremonies, or in pot shops for sale in food and in smokable forms. According to Get the Facts on the Drug War Facts, "Tabacco is the leading cause of death. This legal substance took 435,000 lives in the year 2000. Marijuana still at 0."

Weather you decided to partake it the festivities, or ignored them the Legalization train for Medicinal Marijuana use is rapidly increasing force. It will be interested to see where it will be in a few years.

Facebook vs Myspace

I remember the first time I created my account for Myspace. It was a series of questions, typical for signing up for something like this. I was asked about age, race, sex and marital status. It became more personal with questions asking my favorite books, movies and activities. I put up any random picture and background. I was all ready to begin accepting friend requests. A short time after I was finally comfortable with Myspace, when a new site came out called Facebook. I honestly was not interested in even signing up for one, but was influenced because it had more capabilities than Myspace.

Word of mouth helped these two online networking search engines gain a whole new community. Today more than 400 million active users belong to Facebook, and Myspace with only 125 million users. These websites give opportunities to people by allowing them share important events, broadcast personal music, and can even help find jobs. These websites come in different languages and allows an open door for communication. 70% of the users that belong to Facebook are international users. These two websites help communicate important things that happen around the world. From the touch of your phone you are able to know and see what is going on in another country half way around the world. These are just a few of the good things that comes from inventions like this.

However my personal experience with both of these websites was somewhat close to pointless. I quickly learned that most of the people on my friends list where there for a different reason than I was. Everyday that logged into Facebook and Myspace I encountered, underage parties being promoted, half naked pictures of girls at those parties, along with the kids that were passed out and drawn on. On the status updates I got to read and learn about personal issues, being exposed via internet and in an embarrassing manor. I noticed more humiliation amongst people in my age range than ever before. People would put the who, what, where and when in their status updates without even thinking about the damage that it could do. When the security setting are not set to your preference, your profile is allowed to be looked at by complete strangers. Not only does the danger of stalking alarm me from this website but its social tend dices of cliques continues. It gets more vicious online. Its not a face to face encounter, instead its behind a computer in the comfort of your home. I have read personal sexual conversations that were created to destroy someones reputation. Sexual predators are now allowed to have an even more secretive demeanor online. At times I would just read complete bashing of individuals. All of these reasons and a few more have just turned me off of websites like this.

All though the positive aspects were not fully discussed, they really do out weigh the negative. For the communication and networking aspect, its fantastic. I feel that people really can turn something positive into complete garbage. It is most likely the maturity level of my peers. I just don't have the time or interest to read about nonsense, especially at the expense of someones feelings.
